Shifting The Perspective
Us Vs Them?
The Western Ghats is home to around 40 million people. This fragile landscape faces increasing challenges, including rising human-wildlife conflicts. As human activities encroach further into natural habitats, the balance between humans and wildlife becomes strained. This invariably leads to more frequent and severe confrontations and depletion of important biodiversity.
Or All Of Us
As One?
Our goal is to conserve 10,000 acres in the Western Ghats by 2035. We will achieve this by:
-
Acquiring land for forest protection and conservation of important biodiversity.
-
Developing a playbook for symbiotic coexistence
-
Creating nature-based experiences
-
Establishing a marketplace for native forest products and services
This initiative will also provide sustainable livelihoods for native communities. We believe that conservation efforts should benefit future generations.
Coexistence Creates
Sensitivities
Coexistence fosters sensitivity, awareness, and knowledge. Inspired by nature's organisms, we create a unique approach to biodiversity and conservation by:
-
Conserving small land parcels in the Western Ghats
-
Building a community of professionals, creators, and learners
Our vision is a harmonious world where people and nature thrive together.
Join A Much-Needed
Paradigm
At Mycelium Ecology, we are protecting privately conserved landscapes in the Western Ghats, funded by ‘Conservation Collectives.’ These spaces create local jobs and foster sustainable coexistence.
We focus on preserving natural spaces and sharing knowledge for present and future generations. We aim to help people appreciate nature and shift away from a purely capitalistic mindset.

Creating A Balanced Ecosystem
Mycelium
Ecology
Mycelium Ecology is a community-driven initiative dedicated to conserving and restoring native biodiversity and other protected species in the Western Ghats. We create spaces for deep connections with nature, aiming to protect and enhance the planet's ecological wealth.

Creating A Balanced Ecosystem

Spaces
Community-funded land parcels in the Western Ghats preserve native biodiversity. These areas minimize human intrusion, fostering harmonious coexistence through wildlife conservation and emphasizing the restoration and propagation of local species.

Outreach
Our programs connect young individuals with the environment, fostering responsibility for forest conservation. These initiatives engage the next generation in preservation efforts, promoting sustainability and illustrating the benefits of harmony with nature.

Research
We catalog endemic species and revitalize degraded areas in the Western Ghats. By training local communities in land conservation and advanced ecological knowledge, we enhance scientific understanding and interaction with these ecosystems.

Marketplace
The marketplace allows indigenous communities to sell their products to broader markets, emphasizing ethical consumption and economic benefits. It also uses technology to make conservation efforts more accessible, promoting an open-source approach to ecosystem conservation.

Mycelium Ecology team is struck by the loss of native biodiversity - including old-growth forests, grasslands, wetlands and riverine landscapes - fast replaced by monocultures & stressed plantations; buildings, and commercial tourism.

Naturalists, scientists, and on-ground communities come together with Mycelium to spark new ways of protecting nature: inclusive, scaleable, transparent conservation models.

The Mycelium founding team pioneers the Collective Conservation model: pooling resources to acquire privately held, critical ecosystems - as a sustainable approach to protect & steward critical landscapes.

-
The team spots Dancing Frogs - a rare, endangered species, living only in pristine water systems - at what becomes our pilot conservation site, the Dancing Frog Habitat.
-
The first-ever for-profit Conservation Collective takes shape with a defined legal framework.
-
The team onboards partners - legal, financial, and on-field communities - to plan and implement our first Collective.

-
Mycelium Ecology raises USD 1 million, and acquires the Dancing Frog Habitat: 70 acres of old-growth rainforest, Shola grasslands, wetlands and river mosaics.
-
Understanding our Backyard - Mycelium’s outreach effort - launches with an inaugural edition by natural history author Pranay Lal and IFHD founder Aruna Rangachar Pohl.
-
Connecting the Dots, our nature newsletter, is launched.

-
Mycelium Ecology welcomes 8 Collective Members to Dancing Frog Habitat: people who choose to pool their resources to acquire and protect the Habitat.
-
Mycelium Ecology brings together children and families to Dancing Frog Habitat, forming initial Experiences - nature-immersed stays that invite a deeper connection with nature.
-
Mycelium Dialogues films and publishes its first episodes - a podcast series bringing together experts across industries to explore connections to conservation.

-
Dancing Frog Collective grows to 11 Collective Members.
-
Understanding our Backyard grows to a day festival - celebrating nature across science, art, and community; bringing together scientists, citizens, children, and more in Bengaluru over the Rivers of the Western Ghats.
-
Mycelium Conservation Trust is registered, starting to work closely with native and local communities at our conservation sites.

-
Mycelium Experiences curates nature-immersive programs for children, corporates, and individuals - carefully opening our conservation sites to urban residents, deepening their relationship with nature: Wild Chronicles, Wild Detectives, and Wild Offsites.
-
Understanding our Backyard hosts monthly events in Bengaluru, offering spaces and curating experiences to slow down, build a community, while we reconnect with nature.
